Such planning entails policy, legal, educational, cultural, and technical components, most of which are interrelated and each of which must be satisfactorily addressed for the repository to succeed. The Open Society Institute intends this document to help organizations with one facet of their repository planning: selecting a software system that best satisfies an institution's needs. An institution's system needs will be driven by its content policies and by the procedures required to implement those policies. A well designed and carefully planned repository program can function well with any of the systems discussed here-but none of these systems can help a poorly designed or inadequately planned repository succeed. It will also provide a window to the past and the future of the book in China. The conference will include a mix of keynote address, paper, workshop and colloquium sessions, with speakers discussing topics as varied as: the effects of print on demand and ebooks; the future of the book from a library perspective; emerging standards for electronic and printed books; learning in the electronic age; trends in reading and literacy; and strategies to enhance the viability the publishing industry. The International Conference on the Future of the Book will provide you with an opportunity to share your own work with recognised leaders in the fields of writing, IT, business management, librarianship, publishing, printing, educational materials production, as well as university teachers and researchers in areas related to writing, publishing, books and literacy. Dear Friends If we always think that we would require OFFICIAL resources, I don't think we can do much towards better-ment of our profession. Should not we take it like our religion...?, Is it too costly today to have personal computer at home with Internet..? I am sure, most of you are either having it or have planned to have it (IF NOT FOR YOU, FOR ATLEAST YOUR HIGH SCHOOL CHILDREN). Can we spare some time for the profession at home..? Can we spend something for the profession like we do for our other daily life...? If we look our profession as a mission, I think we would stop blaming availability of resources. We can have n-number of forums and may subscribe to these depending upon our own resources and interests. However, IT WOULD PAY MUCH MORE DIVIDENDS TO SELECT ONE AND DECLARE ONE IT AS COMMON VOICE OF THE COMMUNITY. All the community members should be encouraged to join ATLEASTthis group.
