RE: [LIS-Forum] LIS-FORUM: ITS ROLE
RE: [LIS-Forum] LIS-FORUM: ITS ROLE I agree with Mr Gouder. Lis-forum has already become (by virtue of heavy usage, members from diverse institutions, and the perceived utility by subscribers) number one among such forums for librarians and library science. It is necessary for the professional to keep abreast of happenings in the country. Therefore posts from other foru m s should be welcome. Only one minor problems needs to be addressed. As I am greedy, I subscribe to several mailing lists: Lis-forum, corp.
Emala, IATLIS,Lis-net etc. When messages are cross-posted a lot of duplication at the subscriber's end occurs. As many messages contain replies to some first link in a thread, one has to read through a lot of messages before deleting duplicates. How can we avoid such duplication? In this way forum is networking LIS Professionals and concerned professional associations all over the country, be it fron Kashmir, TN, West Bengal or Karnataka. I am of the opinion that apart from discussing professional matters we should know what is going on in professional circles elsewhere too. While each Association can have its own discussion forum, important announcemnets should be covered by Lis-Forum irrespective of whether

Dear Colleagues, I do agree that this LIS-Forum started by Late Dr. Rajashekar is the first of its kind in the country for library professionals. Over the year it has helped all of us in many ways. It is an example of a practical work done by Dr. TBR, and not just 'plain talk' given by many. However, I do not agree to Mr. Goudar's statement ".... Rather we need (not?) bother about the quality, importance and relevance of the of the content in the postings....". I think that the quality and relevance of the content is also very important in lis-forum. We are already aware that many of the postings on this forum are too immature and lack quality and sense of direction. If we need to keep this forum active and alive, we should definitely adhere to some standards. M.
