NDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE Documentation Research and Training Centre 8th Mile, Mysore Road Bangalore 560059 Seminar on Word Sense Disambiguation : An Introduction Abstract: Word sense disambiguation (WSD) is a core problem in many tasks related to language processing. Word Sense Disambiguation is the process of identifying which sense of a word is used in any given sentence, when the word has a number of distinct senses. Lexical disambiguation in its broadest definition is nothing less than determining the meaning of every word in context, which appears to be a largely unconscious process in people .It is often described as a computational problem whose solution presupposes complete natural-language understanding .This area will have application in enhancing information retrieval. This seminar will give an overview of supervised, unsupervised, and knowledge-based approaches to WSD.A few applications of WSD are discussed.
