Status of the Million Books of India project
Friends, Canada has launched a wonderful digitization project. Please see: https://internetarchivecanada.org/2024/07/01/internet-archive-canada-launche... . We in India did start one way back in 2000 when IISc's Prof. N Balakrishnan (known as Balki), with the support of the redoubtable Prof. Raj Reddy and President Abdul Kalam, initiated the Million Books Project of India (see his YouTube talk on The Digital Library of India and its Journey). Does anyone know of the current status of the project? I would like to know about it. The National Digital Library of India maintained by IITKh appears to be essentially an education portal largely focused on textbooks and examinations (at all levels). There are several other digitization projects in India, many specializing on content in individual languages such as Srujanika in Oudiya and Project Madurai in Tamil. It will be a good idea for an enterprising student to write a doctoral or master's thesis on digitization efforts in India. Any takers? With best wishes, Arun
