Re: [LIS-Forum] LIS-Forum Digest, Vol 193, Issue 24

This is great initiative, that Academic Libraries Like Calcutta University
is being opened for Public. I believe all academic libraries including
School, Colleges and Universities needs to be opened for public, may be on
nominal charges throughout India. This step will boost Public Libraries of
India and every individual will get facilities of Libraries around the
country. In this connection, Commercial reading halls are emerging in the
market to facilitate the users and meet their demands charging huge money.
To stop this, above decision (Calcutta University is being opened for
Public) is an counter attack. Even government in power needs to think and
act on this.
Request all other librarians to make efforts to open their libraries to
public, particularly to get connected with public and maintain our
(Libraries and librarians) status in the society.

Well, Everyone would welcome Calcutta university’s initiative to open its library to public. In fact there are a few academic libraries in our country who are already doing this. In what way this will boost public libraries? In fact the remaining few public libraries that are doing some service will be totally wiped out. It would be sensible if our LIS experts who sit on various library committees should urge the Government to revitalise public libraries by increased funding and support. CSR is a great concept if applied to public libraries can enable public libraries to stand on their feet. Dr M Koteswara Rao Retd. Librarian, Univ of Hyderabad. Sent from my iPhone

I believe Academic Libraries would support public library system in India
and fill the gap of non availability of public libraries everywhere, so
that every Individual will be get benefited by accessing to library
services around the country.

True, academic libraries can fill the void created by lack of adequate public libraries; but we also need public libraries to flourish in every town and village because they are real community libraries which need to be promoted and supported. Just because some university libraries are open to public we cannot ignore public libraries.
