Dear All, *InSight: Special Lecture series @ MYRA (13)* “Taming the Hydra: Combining Research, Development, Outreach, and Social Responsibility to maximize Impact in a Cultural Heritage Project” By *Dr. Unmil P Karadkar* Assistant Professor School of Information The University of Texas, Austin *Date and Time: *July 28, 2014 | 4:30 PM *Venue: *Athena Auditorium, MYRA *Talk Summary: * The Central State Hospital Archives and Digital Libraries project (in need of better branding?) aims to preserve historically significant records of the first mental health institution for African-Americans in the USA. The records under consideration span a hundred years since the Civil War (1868) to the Civil Rights movement (1968). These records consist of hospital administrative records, legislative records, as well as patient and treatment records, which detail the evolution of mental health practice over the last century. The digitized records take up about 14 Terabytes of hard disk space and present a tremendous technical challenge for providing access as these include handwritten records and poorly printed documents. Several communities are interested in accessing these documents, including medical and legal historians, mental health professionals, lawyers, genealogists, policymakers, and families of the former patients. In addition to the technical challenges of preserving over 14TB of data and providing access to it (Big Data, anyone?), our challenges include striking the balance between maintaining the privacy of the patients and their families against providing access to the various stakeholders and interested groups. This talk will focus on our challenges and approach in planning, managing, and executing this ambitious project. *SpeakerBio:* Unmil Karadkar is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the School of Information, the University of Texas at Austin. He conducts research at the intersection of human-centered computing, digital collections, and information visualization, bridging the gap between the information needs and goals of a community by augmenting digital collections, designing software to use these collections, and evaluating the impact of the designed software on a community’s practices. He collaborates with researchers from diverse areas such as the sciences, humanities, and nursing.
