Date: August 19th – 20th , 2006 Venue: St. Francis de Sale’s College, Nagpur About the Organizers DLISc, RTM NU, Nagpur The Department of Library and Information Science, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur, was established in the year 1956, and this is one of the oldest Library Science departments in the country. This year, Department of Library and Information Science is celebrating its Golden Jubilee. The department started with a Diploma course in Library Science, which was upgraded to Bachelor’s Degree in 1966. Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, was started in the year 1984. The Department is also offering doctoral programme since 1987. Two years Integrated MLISC, course was implemented in the department in 2003, based on UGC Model Curriculum. Department has organized a number of National Conferences, workshops and UGC Refresher Courses to its credit SALIS SALIS is a registered professional body, actively involved in the development of all spheres of Library and Information Science by organizing various programs such as seminar, lectures, training programs on emerging topics. It has chapters in many places to provide service in the respective regions regularly. SALIS instituted many awards to honor LIS professionals in the country. One of the objectives of SALIS is to train the Library and Information professionals to handle the latest IT tools and techniques more effectively and efficiently in order to provide quality-based services. SALIS has conducted thirty five workshops, and training programmes on at various parts, of the country in the last four year. Continuing Education Programme (CEP) SALIS is periodically conducting lectures on emerging trends by experts from all over the country. The Thrust areas are Information Communication Technology (ICT), Human Resource Development and provide training to handle digital tools and techniques SFS College Nagpur St.Franscis De Sales College Nagpur was established in 1956 by Aechbishop Eugene D’Souza as a service in Higher education to the city of Nagpur This Year this Institution is also celebrating its Golden Jubilee. It caters to More than 1600 students for various courses like B.Sc, BA, BCS, and Msc ( Chemistry and Biotechnology) It is located at Seminary hills which is the most beautiful part of the city About the Workshop Greenstone Digital Library Software (GSDL) is a open source software used for building and distributing digital library collections. It provides a new way of organizing information and publishing it on the Internet or on CD-ROM Greenstone is produced by the Zealand Digital Library Project at the University of Waikato, and developed and distributed in cooperation with UNESCO and the Human Info NGO The main objective of organizing this workshop is to provide a first hand knowledge of the Greenstone Digital Library Software, which is gaining immense popularity in digitization of manuscripts, and rare materials, and towards building up digital libraries. The workshop will be conducted by experts, and will cover the theoretical, and practical aspects of the “Greenstone Software”. It will provide a practical demonstration, and hands on experience for the participants. This workshop is first of its kind, in the entire region, and will prove extremely beneficial for the Library and Information Science professionals, teachers, students and research scholars.
