State Level Celebration of Dr Ranganathan’s Day

State Level Celebration of Dr Ranganathan’s Day Karnataka State College Librarians Association (KSCLA) and Department of Collegiate Education, Government of Karnataka, had jointly organized for the 1st time the Celebration of Dr S R Ranganathan’s Day as the Librarian’s day on August 12, 2009 at Maharani’s Science College in Bangalore . Mr Kadadevaramatt S. L, president of KSCLA, in his introductory note spoke on the relevance of the celebration of Dr S. R. Ranganathan's day as Librarian's Day. Prof V. G. Talawar, released the association's quarterly newsletter edited by B. S. Malwad. He reminded us of the contributions of Dr SRR to library classification, cataloguing, and the five laws of Library Science and his role in passing Public Library Bills in the different states of India. Sri A.S. Srikanth, Principal Secretary, Dept of Higher Education inaugurated the programmme. In his presidential address he recollected his meeting with Dr Ranganathan in his child hood days and his birth day is being celebrated as State Level Day and Karnataka is the first state in this regard. He highlighted the role of libraries and librarian's in the academic environments. Dr (Mrs) N. Nagambikadevi, Commissioner for Higher Education was the Chief Guest and inaugurated the association's (www.karcollegelibrarians.net) designed and developed by Mr Veeru Uppin. She stressed the importance of library and the librarians in her speech. She also mentioned grievances if any, of librarians will be sorted out and parity with teachers will be maintained. Sri Basavaraj Horatti, Former Minister and MLA was another Chief Guest and recollected how he was able to convince the officers for issue of Government order to celebrate Dr Ranganathan’s Day as State Level Celebration Day and urged the Principal Secretary and the Commissioner to solve all pending problems of Librarians and payment of arrears due to 1996 UGC fixation on par with teachers. Prof Kodandaramaiah, Director of Collegiate Education, Smt Kamlamma, Additional Director of Collegiate Education, Prof A.M. Narahari, President of Karnataka State University Teachers Association, and Principal (i/c) of Maharani Science college were also present. Doyen among Librarians Sri S R Gunjal and the past President of KSCLA Sri T C Gadad were felicitated for their contribution to library science and library profession. Six Librarians, who are the recipients of Ph D.during the year were felicitated during the occasion. Mr Mahesh Horkeri proposed the vote of thanks and Smt Sujatha from Theosophical College , Hospet compeered the programme. About 350 librarians from all over Karnataka attended the function.
