I agree with Mr Gouder. Lis-forum has already become (by virtue of heavy usage, members from diverse institutions, and the perceived utility by subscribers) number one among such forums for librarians and library science. It is necessary for the professional to keep abreast of happenings in the country. Therefore posts from other forums should be welcome. Only one minor problems needs to be addressed. As I am greedy, I subscribe to several mailing lists: Lis-forum, corp. librarians, Emala, IATLIS,Lis-net etc. When messages are cross-posted a lot of duplication at the subscriber's end occurs. As many messages contain replies to some first link in a thread, one has to read through a lot of messages before deleting duplicates. How can we avoid such duplication? One of the Lis-Forum member has strongly expressed his feelings that postings covering Regional/State level associations should not be broadcast on Lis-Forum. But if you see the postings all these years, forum has been covering items issued by be it MALIBNET, KALA, MYLISA, RSC-Delhi, IATLIS, SIS, etc or a message from an University. In this way forum is networking LIS Professionals and concerned professional associations all over the country, be it fron Kashmir, TN, West Bengal or Karnataka. I am of the opinion that apart from discussing professional matters we should know what is going on in professional circles elsewhere too. While each Association can have its own discussion forum, important announcemnets should be covered by Lis-Forum irrespective of whether the LIS Association is State/Regional level one as long as the matter is of interest, as has been the case all these days. Rather we need bother about the quality, importance and relevance of the of the content in the postings. Infact Late Dr. T.B. Rajashekar had posted an item toucing some issues concerned in this matter a year back or so. I INVITE LIS-FORUM MEMBERS TO GIVE THEIR OPINION IN THIS MATTER. Dear all, This is connection with the issue of 'role of LIS-Forum in disseminating local events and news' There two key issues here- the need for disseminating local news and events and the role of a communication channel Here are my two cents on these two issues. --- As the saying goes, think global, act local; think local and act global Internationalisation goes hand in hand with localization efforts. We need to know the happenings in our own local, regional, national levels before thinking of international. It is because we do not believe and practice in this- in India we often end up recognizing things only when local knowledge has become a global phenomenon (only after it has been exported and then imported - be it Ravishankar, Yoga, ) Today, in the present day World e-communication of List servs, Bulletin boards, blogs and Wikis and others, the demarcation between formal and informal communication has blurred. All communication channels share certain key characteristics and serve certain functions. Some of the key functions of a communication channel include: · Dissemination of information and sharing of ideas and opinions · A forum for discussion, debate, public opinion and a means of consensus building · Community building The LIS Forum has been a pioneer of sorts and has achieved remarkable success in all of the above. It has been a very effective community building forum which is needed especially in a practice oriented and interdisciplinary field such as LIS. It has been serving the LIS community quite admirably since its inception through the efforts of our dear friend late Dr. T.B. Rajashekar and the initial support by NISSAT, DSIR, Government of India. -- Shalini Dr.Shalini R.
