Librarians are very open to welcome anybody.same logic must be applied in
other professions.A University Librarian is not eligible to be a professor
in library science department as per UGC norms. But UGC finds Statistics
professor to be Director INFLIBNET.Before we comment kindly do read
advertisement published and also available on UGC website .Transparency is
strength but it is none existent in this selection.

A previous long term Director was Dr Donald Lindberg who was a doctor - an MD in Pathology, but also taught Information Sciences. Dr SRR was a pioneer - he created the library profession.
As others have said, I agree it is not the qualification alone but their contributions to such systems as a whole. I also agree that there must be transparency in selection and everyone needs to know how and why one is selected - this applies to any major position
Just my opinion. I value differences in opinions.

Sorry, UGC rules are there but how many of our higher education institutions are following? If university librarian is not eligible for a professor in LIS then why so many of these departments have librarians in their board of studies and also as research guides? The irony is that people use rules to their convenience since neither UGC nor AICTE will come to know about it until someone goes to court. A LIS faculty who never worked in a library can be a member in the section committee to recruit university librarian but a librarian is not eligible to select LIS faculty, where is the logic? I can give many examples where non-librarians occupied library positions and are taking decisions on library matters. If we start questioning and find fault with the selection process in our own profession we will end up doing more harm than good. So let’s not dig our past.
