Fwd: Post Graduate Diploma in Application of Open Source Software in Library (PGDAOSSL)
Sir,You are very right that the librarians will use only a particular software package from each category. But they need to be trained at lest two or three from each category.. It will gives you two way benefit. a) Firstly, the implementer can choose or they have choices to choose at least from two or three. b) If the growth and development of a particular software stops (in case of OSS it is very frequent) they can shift over to others.. We have a plan to change our syllabus in every three years.. we have to cope with the subjects not to be tried to escape from it.. This course will be both for librarians and teachers of LIS. Lastly, I am always inspiring from your comments.. it gives a new wing to my thought.. thanks a lot. Badan, This idea of an OSS course is good. Libraries and OSS surely gel well. But I think a course need to be more broad based - focusing first on the concepts, history of OSS. For example the difference between 'Free software' and 'Freeware' is very little understood. Plus, the pros and cons of using a software etc. Like others mentioned in this forum, the tools would keep changing over time. So the training should focus on how a librarian is able to cope with changes over time and take the right decisions according to the needs of an institution he/she is serving. Before going over installations of specific library software, it would be a good idea to give short intoductions to other OSS on which these software are dependend - like OS, RDBMS and scripting langugages. Though not at the level comptuter science professionals learn it, I think a modern librarian who wants to apply IT to provide services should at least have an idea of these. Of course, practicals could cover the installations and customization of a few software of each type. Covering all these areas, I think would be a wholesome course.
