National Conference on "Knowledge Management in Libraries and Information Centers" (KMLIC-2015), Date: 18th – 19th March, 2015

Under the UGC-Special Assistance Programme (SAP DRS-I) is going to
organize a National Conference on “Knowledge Management in Libraries and
Information Centers (KMLIC-2015)” on 18th – 19th March, 2015.
*Introduction*
Knowledge Management (KM) is an influential tool for promoting uniqueness,
realizing and re-engineering the various aspects of day-to-day activities
of an organization. Knowledge Management is a new research area which is
developing very rapidly. In the current knowledge economy, the survival of
organization depends on how good it manages the knowledge to achieve
sustainable competitive advantage. Information professionals should also
evolve and adopt the knowledge environment by implementing knowledge
management in their field.
Knowledge management represents an opportunity by entrusting new roles and
responsibilities for libraries and LIS professionals. LIS professionals
have to gain new skills and involve themselves effectively in knowledge
management practices to become relevant to their organisations to enable
them to have a competitive edge for employment to people from other
industries. The ultimate purpose of KM is to increase the effectiveness and
sustainability of organizations, particularly in case of libraries and
information centers. Although the concept of KM originated in the business
field, but in practice it has now spread to the non-profit sector as well.
Libraries as non-profit making organisations, improve their communication
both horizontally and vertically thus promoting a sharing culture. It is
for the same implications that the conference is being organised to pool up
both the knowledge and experiences of the professionals working in the
areas of KM and discuss the tools of managing the assets of knowledge.
The conference is enveloping mostly on the various facets of Knowledge
Management and its application in Libraries and Information Centers,
thrived particularly with the following objectives:
- To create awareness and provide a platform for exchange of ideas
concerning tacit and explicit knowledge
- To share knowledge and skills among academicians/ LIS professionals/
other knowledge based professionals working in private and public sector.
- To understand knowledge management tools and their usage in KM
initiatives.
- To provide an opportunity to share innovative ideas and plans in the
areas of KM.
To identify suitable initiatives in implementing KM in the library and
information centers.
*About AMU*
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), established in 1920, A.M.U. is one of the
oldest central government funded universities in India. It was evolved out
of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College (MAO College), which was set up by
the great visionary and social reformer, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1877. From
its very inception, it has kept its door open to the members of all
communities and from all corners of the country and the world. It occupies
a unique position amongst universities and institutions of higher learning
in the country. The main campus of AMU is located in the city of Aligarh.
Quite recently, the University has been ranked among the best educational
institutions in India. According to Times Higher Education Asia Ranking
2014, AMU has ranked 3rd among all Universities in India. It Ranked 50th
among top 100 institutions of higher learning in BRICS grouping-2014 and 5th
in The Week-Hansa Research (Best Universities Survey) 2014.
*About Department*
The foundation of the Department of Library Science was laid way back in
1950-51 with the introduction of a 'Certificate Course in Library Science,'
by the then University Librarian, (Late) Padmashree Prof. S. Bashiruddin,
who later on introduced a full time ‘Bachelor of Library Science' course in
1958-59 with full time Lecturers for the first time in the country.
Subsequently, 'Master of Library Science' was introduced in1970-71 and Ph.D
in 1990-91. A special feature of the revised syllabi is the emphasis on
Information Technology and hands-on training on a number of library
automation software packages. A well-equipped computer lab supports the
revised syllabi with Internet facility. The seminar library of the
department is the first fully automated library of the university. The
teachers of the department have also received training in Information
Technology within the country and also abroad. Presently the department is
headed by the chairman Prof. Shabahat Husain, who has been recently
conferred with the Prof. S.P Narang Research Promotion Award by Indian
Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS).
The department has had the distinction of completing a number of DST and
UGC major research projects by designing and developing L.I.S. Subject

Shabahat Husain developed ‘Social Science Cyber Library’

http://www.socsccybraryamu.ac.in*), inaugurated by His Excellency Shri
Pranab Mukherjee on 27.12.2013 as a part of inaugural programme of XXXVII
Social Science Congress held from 27th to 31st December 2013. The Social
Science Cyber Library which is first of its kind in the whole world is
being used in 63 countries so far. Under the UGC’s Programme, the
Department was awarded Special Assistance Programme SAP (DRS-I) in the
financial year 2013-2014 for five years. The theme of the project is
Knowledge Management with Prof.Shabahat Husain as its Coordinator and Dr.
Naushad Ali.P.M as its Dy. Coordinator. The conference is one of the
components of the project which is organised in the area of knowledge
management and the strategies of organizing and capturing the knowledge in
libraries and information centers.

The conference would provide opportunities to meet and hear from library
professionals, leaders and information scientists in all types of
environments particularly from libraries and information centers, some of
the categories are:
- Academic fraternity in teaching, learning and research
- Library and information science professionals
- Information technology professionals
- Research scholars and students
- Information scientists
- All stakeholder’s of knowledge management
*Call for Papers*
KMLIC-2015 welcomes submissions of research and scientific papers, case
studies, working papers, etc. related to all aspects of Knowledge
Management particularly based on the themes and sub themes of the
conference. The paper submitted should have been neither published anywhere
nor kept under consideration for publication. All papers will go through a
review process and accepted papers will be published in the Conference
Proceedings/Edited Book. The papers should be submitted in soft form as an
