Indian Institute of Geomagnetism is a premier research institute in the field of geomagnetism and allied areas of Upper Atmospheric Physics and Solid Earth Geophysics. The Institute is successor to the Colaba Observatory which was set up in 1823 by East India Company, and where the first magnetic observations were started in 1841. It became an autonomous research institute in 1971, was named as Indian Institute of Geomagnetism and is now under Department of Science & Technology. Apart from basic and applied research, the Institute operates 10 modern magnetic observatories spread across the country and has two research centres at Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu and Allahabad, U.P. The Institute library has comprehensive collection in the subject area of geomagnetism and its allied fields. It has collection of more than 20,000 volumes of books and bound periodicals. Other formats like maps, reprints, reports and non book material are also available to the users. Library is fully automated and all the library operations are done using SLIM21. Library facilities are also made available to our observatory staff and two research centres. Collection: Books: 7308 Journal Volumes: 12168 Reprints: 736 Maps: 810 The library of the Institute intends to take one fresh MLIS student as library trainees for which a walk-in interview will be held on June 23rd, 2009 at 10.30 hrs. in the Institute premises. We are looking for students preferably with science background and having good academic records. Knowledge of computers is essential and familiarity of library software will be added qualification and will get preference.
