New library in Mumbai for visually impaired PTI (HIndustan Times) Mumbai, December 4

A library for the visually impaired was opened at the Victoria Memorial School for the blind here today.

The state-of-the-art library was inaugurated by Justice Radhakrishnan of Bombay High Court. Claimed to be the first of its kind in the country, the library has Braille books, 'talking' books such as recorded cassettes and CDs, has Reading Machines, an enlargement equipment to help those with low vision.

It also provides access to Internet and has space for listening to music and read-aloud sessions. Workshops, lectures and discussions on topics of general interest will be periodically organised, the school Principal Shalan Chavan said.

Established in 1902 for the benefit of the blind, the Victoria Memorial school today has a strength of 100 residential students and 20 day scholars from different parts of the country and the demand for admission continues, Chavan said.
