Dear All, You are cordially invited for next NCSI-NET meeting, which is going to be held on Saturday 19th of March 2005 by 11:00 AM at NCSI. The speaker will be Mr. Francis Jayakanth from NCSI. Tea/Coffee will be served at 10.45 AM. Title: My experiences as a Fulbrighter Through this informal talk-cum-demo, he will share his recent experience as a Fulbrighter in the US in general and at the Old Dominion University (ODU) in particular. The talk-cum-demo will mainly revolve around the work he did at the ODU. Title of his Fulbright proposal: Approaches to make CDS/ISIS Databases OAI-Compliant. Abstract -------- One of the biggest obstacles for information dissemination to a user community is that many Digital Libraries or bibliographic databases use heterogeneous technologies that inhibit interoperability. The Open Archives Initiative (OAI) addresses interoperability by using a framework to facilitate the discovery of content stored in distributed archives or bibliographic databases through the use of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Though the Open Archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) is becoming the de facto standard for digital libraries, some of the old bibliographic databases, for a variety of reasons, are still not OAI compliant. One such system is CDS/ISIS, which was designed specifically for handling bibliographic/textual information efficiently. CDS/ISIS is quite widely used by the LIS community. There is a need for making CDS/ISIS databases OAI-compliant to enable sharing of metadata and thus leading to better federated discovery services for the end users. In this talk-cum-demo, I'll describe two approaches for making CDS/ISIS databases OAI compliant: Static and Dynamic. In the static approach, CDS/ISIS records are exported and converted into an OAI static repository format. The static repository file is made OAI-compliant either by importing it into the Kepler archivelet, a light-weight, easy-to-install OAI compliant archive for the individuals or static repository file becomes OAI-compliant through the intermediation of static repository gateway. This approach has certain limitations. These limitations are overcome in the dynamic approach. In the dynamic approach, an OAI layer makes CDS-ISIS databases OAI-compliant in the real time. During the demo, a federated search on a few sample CDS/ISIS databases will be shown. Please confirm your presence to me (madhuresh_s@aurigene.com) or Prasanna (t.s.prasanna@intel.com).
