Indian Statistical Institute Documentation Research & Training Centre Bangalore 560 059 Workshop on Koha and NewGenlib 15-16 December 2010 Organised by Documentation Research and Training Centre (DRTC) Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Modern library is a conglomeration of print-on-paper material as well as electronic resources and is often referred to as the hybrid library. Irrespective of the physical form of the resources, the basic goal continues to be provision of effective and efficient access to information resources to those who are in need and the focus is on the end-user. In the academic and R & D environments the library is the resource centre that supports and expands the horizons of users while in the corporate sector it is widely perceived as a component of the decision-support system. The growing complexity of information resources, the difficulties and challenges in meeting the growing demand on its resources, and user expectations have made it necessary for libraries to automate their operations. The early years of library automation were dominated by locally developed software; the expanding market resulted in the development of a number of commercial library automation packages. In recent years, however, there is a growing emphasis on adoption of open source software. Open access, open source software, and open standards are three concepts that are receiving increasing attention. The library world is no exception to this. Open source software can benefit libraries by lowering initial and ongoing costs, eliminating vendor lock-in, and allowing for greater flexibility. Open standards allow for interoperability and facilitate data migration between systems. Two of the most widely talked about open source library automation software, especially in India, are KOHA and NewGenLib. This workshop is intended to provide the participants an in-depth understanding of these two software packages and their use for library automation. The workshop will cover the following areas: Overview of Library Automation; Open source Software for library automation Koha: Installation, Operations, Customization NewGenlib: Installation, Operations, Customization Metadata Standards The workshop methodology will be: Lectures by Experts (Mr. Siddartha, NewGenlib will install and give demo) Demonstrations Hands- on in the installation and use of the Software packages The Participants: The workshop is targeted at Library and information professionals from the academia and industry.
