Founded by Professor P.C. Mahalanobis in Kolkata on 17th December, 1931, the institute gained the status of an Institution of National Importance by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1959. Documentation Research and Training Centre (DRTC) was established in January 1962 as a division of the Indian Statistical Institute. It developed as a result of social forces. Soon after independence, the Government of India created the Indian Standards Institution in 1947. In the same year, its Documentation (Sectional) Committee was formed with Prof.S R Ranganathan as chairman. A proposal was made to Union Ministry of Education for the establishment of a National Documentation Centre. ABOUT THE CONFERENCE Information pervades our lives. As a result, academic libraries are rethinking their strategies and services to meet the challenges of the digital world and the demands of the “born digital” generation.
