Dear friends It is really good that people are sharing their views on this topic. UGC NET examination is mainly aimed at qualitative screening but this does not mean that those who have qualified NET are always good in teaching. Also to mention, those who have a thorough knowledge of the subject might not have the ability to transfer the knowledge efficiently to students. Already there are two objective papers in UGC examination. These papers can (though not completely) measure the subject knowledge/ general awareness of a person. Moreover, anyone who can by heart model objective questions from guides and with a good memory can qualify objective papers. This is not the case with descriptive questions. It analyzes the ability of a candidate to consolidate and effectively express in writing, his/her ideas of the subject and these are the skills that a librarian should essentially possess. This quality is not expected of a teacher alone. Subjective type measures the subject knowledge as well because we cannot expect a person without sufficient subject knowledge to express ideas specifically. Incorporating teaching skills (essential for teachers) in library science course is a good idea but at the same time it is important to remember that subjects such as Technical Writing (for librarians) are already included as part of MLISc. What I feel is, the evaluation process of descriptive paper should be reviewed and streamlined in order to attain better results. Whether UGC qualified /not, may not be the only reason why groupism prevails in academic or any other libraries. Hence, I think the current scheme of evaluation should continue, so that UGC aspirants work hard for attaining deeper knowledge of the subject as well as other skills such as interpretation, consolidation of knowledge, effective writing and so on. One more point to mention here. I would like to know if anyone who have qualified UGC NET are of the opinion that descriptive paper should be avoided and it would be good if they share their opinion as well.
