UNIVERSITY OF KERALA NOTIFIES THE POST OF UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN VACANT SINCE 1989 One of the first 16 Universities in India, the University of Kerala was founded as the University of Travancore in the erstwhile princely state of Travancore in 1937 the Maharajah of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma who was also the first Chancellor of the University. He even made an unsuccessful attempt to invite Albert Einstein to be the first Vice-Chancellor. later Sir C. P Ramaswamy Ayyar, the then Diwan of the State was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor. The University was modelled after the best Universities of the United Kingdom, and even today retains some of these features. The University had campuses located in three different parts of the State. At present, the University has sixteen faculties and forty one departments of teaching and research in addition to study centres and other departments. The quality of the education and research at the university can be compared to any university world wide even though the ranking systems, which scan through the surface, have never noticed it. University Departments like Computational Biology and Bioinformatics are unique examples, which show how consistent and concerted efforts in an Indian University can lead to an academically fruitful exercise worthy of emulation in universities worldwide and can win international acclaim for Indian research work. The Department attracts funding of over 110 millions from international agencies and also students from all over the world University of Kerala has one of the few best university libraries in India and in its scientific organization is second only to Madras University Library which was set by Dr. S. R Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science. In its initial phase this library was headed by one of the best academicians in the university, Prof. KA Isaac, whom all the faculty and students considered, irrespective of their specialization, the best teacher and guide. The physical infrastructure Prof Isaac has envisioned is future proof. Post of University Librarian remains vacant since Prof. Isaac left in 1989. University has now advertised the post of University Librarian the top level post which is to manage invluable knowledge and information resources and related infrastructures worth above Rs. 1000 crore at current rates.
