FYI Good news for PhD aspirants Sat, Jul 26 01:20 AM Teachers wanting to do PhD at Delhi University have a reason to smile. The University will now allow PhD scholars to take a break in between and then re-register. While Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) already has this facility, DU introduced the system in the Academic Council meeting held on Thursday. "Many times, after enrolling himself a PhD scholar gets an offer to teach or is offered a project for which he has to take leave. After his registration is confirmed, he can take up to three years' leave and then re-register himself," said Pankaj Garg, council member. "While a PhD student can take up to five years to complete his thesis, the three-year leave period will not be counted within the five-year time frame," Garg said. Also, permanent, ad hoc and temporary teachers with two years of teaching experience can enroll in a PhD programme. This would encourage teachers to pursue their doctorate, Garg said. College teachers will also find representation in the Board of Research Studies and Department Research Committee. "Moreover, college teachers with a PhD are now entitled to supervise research students. This is a positive step since the number of PhD students under a faculty member affects his/her promotion," said council member Janmejoy Khuntia. In another step that will ensure funding for maximum PhD scholars, DU will hold entrance tests/interviews for those students who have been unable to qualify for UGC's Junior Research Fellowship or other such tests. "Earlier, students who did not get a UGC fellowship were often left high and dry. Now, if they qualify the entrance/interview they will be eligible for various other scholarships such as SAP and Research Fellowship for Meritorious Students given by the Centre for Advanced Studies," said Khuntia. Moreover, the span period for the submission of a thesis has been reduced from five to four years.
