Dear Colleagues, Swedish government founded the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) (http://www.alma.se) in the memory of renowned author Astrid Lindgren as the world's largest prize for children's and young adult literature, in 2002. The Award total is Swedish krona five million, presented every year to authors, illustrators, oral storytellers and those active in reading promotion work. Authors receive the award for their entire oeuvre, not for individual works. Illustrators and oral storytellers are also eligible to win the Award. The award may also be presented to persons or organizations working to stimulate reading by children and young adults. Only living persons may receive the award. The award winners are chosen by a jury with broad expertise in international children’s and young adult literature, reading promotion and children’s rights. The 12 members include authors, literary critics and scholars, illustrators and librarians. One member represents Astrid Lindgren’s family. To enhance the global aspect, every year the jury chooses institutions and organizations from around the world who may nominate candidates for the award. A common feature of the nomination bodies is that they have a good overview and knowledge of authors, illustrators, storytellers and reading promotion activities in their countries or language areas. In India, the nomination bodies are: Indian Section of IBBY Association of Writers and Illustrators for Children (AWIC) Nehru House 4 Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg New Delhi 110 002 T/F: (9111) 2331 1095 E: info@awic.in W: www.awic.in Indian Journal of Library & Information Science Asharfi Lal, Editor-in-Chief Red Flower Publication Pvt.
