Dear Sir/ Madam, Greetings from INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar! INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar has announced the *One Week National Workshop on Metadata Management and Open Source Discovery Systems for Libraries 24th – 29th June 2019.* *About Workshop:* The field of metadata is in transition phase, where job titles and responsibilities are making the shift from traditional cataloging to non-MARC resource description. The role of cataloguer is now changed to integrating non-MARC metadata in response to libraries' increasing focus on the collection of electronic resources and provide easy discovery of library resources to users. In addition to have knowledge of traditional cataloguing, library staff need to update themselves with knowledge of metadata/advanced metadata topics; emerging metadata standards; general programming; XML and organization of information including electronic resources. There are certain tools and techniques available for retrospective conversion of bibliographic data, such as ISISASCII, ISISMARC, MarcEdit etc., which are available in open domain or in open source. INFLIBNET Centre has also contributed an open source utility for converting Ms-Excel data into MARCXML format. In addition to metadata conversion, several open source discovery softwares are also available for providing single search option of various kind of resources available in library. It also provides option for harvesting metadata from various repositories. The Workshop includes lectures as well as extensive hands-on training which will provide both theoretical as well as practical exposure to the participants. The participants will get fair idea and ability to convert various types of bibliographic data such as books, journal articles, theses, etc., into standardized format i.e. MARC21. The participants will also learn basics of XML and XSL for mapping different metadata into a single indexed format. The Workshop will provide extensive training on installation and configuration of above mentioned softwares and VuFind open source software which will enable participants to independently work on conversion of bibliographic data and managing metadata. *Following topics will be covered in the workshop: * - Introduction to Metadata and Metadata Standards; - Fundamentals of Retrospective Conversion (Theory); - Use of Copy Cataloguing Process from External Sources - Use of XL2MARCXML Utility developed by INFLIBNET Centre; - Installation and Configuration of ISISMARC and MarcEdit; - Data Migration from MARC21 to Excel and Excel to MARC21 using MARCEdit - Conversion of Multi-Lingual Bibliographic Data; - Verification/ Validation of MARC records; - Metadata Harvesting through OAI-PMH; - Understanding of Linux Commands, XML and XSL; - Open Source Discovery Tools/Softwares; - Installation and customization of VuFind; and - Mapping and importing different category of items to VuFind. *Target Audience* Library professionals working in universities/colleges who are interested in retrospective conversion of bibliographic data, students, information scientists, system administrators, database managers and others with similar domain. *Pre-requisite* Basics of metadata, operating knowledge of Ms-Excel, basic knowledge of MARC21. *Venue* The Training programme will be conducted at Information and Library Network Centre, An IUC of University Grants Commission, Infocity, Gandhinagar-382007, Gujarat, India. *Workshop Fee* The registration fee is Rs. 7,080.00 (Rupees Seven Thousand Eighty only) per person without accommodation and Rs. 10,810.00 (Rupees Ten Thousand Eight hundred Ten only) with accommodation which is inclusive of GST rates. It covers the cost of training programme kit containing training materials, breakfast, lunch and dinner during the training period. The payment should be made through Demand Draft in favour of INFLIBNET Centre payable at Gandhinagar along with filled-in registration form. Fee is non-refundable and non-adjustable. The Centre also accepts payment by NEFT /RTGS for the workshop. The bank account details will be shared on request. *Accommodation* The Centre will arrange accommodation during the period of training at INFLIBNET Guest House (A/C Room) on twin sharing basis. The participants must send prior intimation and charges for accommodation along with registration fees.
