Documentation Research & Training Centre (DRTC) Indian Statistical Institute 8th Mile, Mysore Road, RVCE Post Bangalore, 560 059 COLLOQUIUM-5 (2017-2019) Title : Health Information System : an overview Abstract Health is among one of the basic needs of humans, and development of a country cannot be ensured if it is not able to provide a good health facility to its residents. There is a need for a system which can enhance the quality of health and use daily generated data in medical practices for better and efficient services. World Health Organization (WHO) has identified Health Information Systems (HIS) as critical for achieving health for all, as its objective is not only to gain information but also to improve the health care services. HIS captures, stores, manages, disseminate information related to the health of individuals and organizational activities that works within the health sector. In this presentation, we will primarily focus on different components and their functions, different standards followed by tools and technologies used for increasing work efficiency of HIS. Application of e-health & m-health, which is an electronic process to collect health data of patients and provide health care information to the various stakeholders (e.g., practitioners, researchers, doctors, students) over the mobiles and e-platforms, will be discussed. We will also present the current state of HIS in India.
