WRIC at Mumbai University Campus is organising a one day interactive workshop on 'Thesis Writing Skills' on 5th of February 2006. It is an interesting workshop for all postgraduate students of any discipline and basically targeted to PhD aspirants. Western Regional Instrumentation Centre Mumbai (An Institution Funded by the UGC, New Delhi) Announces An Interactive Workshop On Thesis Writing Skills Date: 5 February 2006 Time: 10 am to 6 pm Venue WRIC Lecture Hall University of Mumbai Vidyanagari, Santacruz (E) Mumbai-400 098 A research work is assessed on the basis of a written report or a thesis submitted to a university awarding the degree. A thesis is not just a long essay. It must have a formal structure and a standard style. It requires careful planning and writing skills. Clear writing reflects clear thinking. The quality of research is mirrored in the thesis. Therefore, it is a crucial and difficult stage in research. Realising this difficulty of researchers, the Western Regional Instrumentation Centre, Mumbai has organised an interactive workshop on Thesis Writing Skills. Topics for the workshop have been selected based on the rich experience of a group of senior professors who have guided and assessed research work. Scope The workshop is planned to cover the structure, style and strategies related to writing a thesis. The spirit of the workshop meticulously takes care of the following few points. · The content of the workshop does not interfere with the research guide's way of supervising the work, but it only supplements his/her task. · It is independent of the theme/subject of research. · It does not intend to teach research methodology. Contents The workshop is aimed at giving a number of practical tips in the following areas. · Strategic planning of writing process or what do the referees look for and how to meet their expectations. · Conceptual organisation of the information gathered from various sources for writing. · Writing Process - Chapter scheme - Sections, paragraphs, sentences, words - Maintaining continuity and flow of ideas - Style and Style Manuals - Referencing of print and electronic sources - Bibliography - Nuances of English Language: Choice and rendering of words and punctuation · Graphics, Illustrations and Tables · Order of introductory and end pages · Appendices and Annexes · Instructions to the data-entry operator and binder · Readability Tests · Editing and Proofreading · Exhaustive check-list before handing over the manuscript for binding. · Instructions for producing the content for Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) programme · Preparation for presentation and viva-voce Method of Instruction Combination of lecture, discussions and exercises. Participation The workshop is useful for any person doing research leading to Ph.D or postgraduate degree programme.
