Dear Friends, Greetings from MyLISA Mysore! MyLISA like to share with you brief report of the MyLISA’s activity on “Librarians’ Day” Mysore Librarians and Information Scientists Association (MyLISA) celebrated the “Librarians’ Day” in a unique way on August 12 to mark the birth anniversary of Padmashree Dr. S.R Ranganathan. Its members visited a few schools and other institutions in the Mysore city and educated the students and public on various aspects of reading, libraries and information use. This effort of MyLISA has received complements from citizens of Mysore and from the librarians all over India through email. The book on 'Guide to Setting Up and Open Library in Schools' authored by Smt. Usha Mukunda was given to the schools by MyLISA on the occasion of Librarians' Day. The glimpses of Librarians' Day (MyLISA Librarians' Day Out) activities is as follows - - A brief talk on ‘How to inculcate reading habits among teenage students’ was held at St.Joseph’s Central School, Vijayanagar, 2nd Stage, Mysore. Quoting Shiv Khera’s book ‘You Can Win’, Mr. Ronald Prakash Cutinha, Librarian, St. Philomena’s College (Autonomous) Mysore stressed on the importance of achieving success in life through reading and through that developing positive attitude. Later in the talk, Ms. Ayesha Haque, Assistant Professor, St. Philomena’s College (Autonomous) Mysore, gave a clarion call to inculcate reading habits at the teenage level itself. - The invited talk by Ms. Vanishree M.S., Librarian from Pramathi Hill View Academy, Mysore, turned as an interactive session at Ideal Jawa Rotary School, JLB Road, Mysore. The talk on ‘Enhancing Reading Habits’ for the student community introduced them to importance of information, value of reading, varieties of reading materials, and also touched upon the importance of Librarians’ Day. - Smt. Rukhminamma, Librarian, Teresian College, Mysore, was the resource person for the talk organized at Taralabalu High School, TK Layout, Mysore on the topic ‘Effective Library Use and Cultivating Reading Habits’. She educated the students on types reading materials, reading techniques, organizing of thoughts and collected information, and finally touched upon what they can expect from libraries. - ‘Skills of reading and techniques of library use’ was the talk delivered by Dr. P. Sarasvathy, Deputy Librarian, University of Mysore, Manasagangotri, Mysore. She conducted an oral quiz and distributed prizes to the winners and chocolate to all the children attended the function. - Dr. K. Prakash, Librarian, KSOU, Mysore spoke to the high school students of Sadvidya High School, Mysore. He emphasized on apart from reading textbooks students should inculcate habit of reading other inspirational books like biographies, books - The students of ‘Gangotrhi High School’ were addressed on the librarians’ day by Smt. Sheela of KSOU. In a highly interactive session, the students learnt the art of reading from the resource person. Students expressed their interest to visit the university library and public library to understand more about libraries for which the resource person promised to take a tour of libraries in coming days. - In a well organized function at Hari Vidyalaya, students from all the classes attended the address given by Sri. S. Nagaraja, Librarian of RIE. He enthused the students to cultivate the habit of reading at the teen age itself. He said books are the best friends and the only long lasting friends. - Apart from schools other institutions were also covered by MyLISA in its reach out activity. Dr. C.P. Ramasesh visited Sarada Vilas College – one of the popular colleges in the city of Mysore. While narrating the importance of librarians’ day, he covered simple procedures followed in the libraries for organizing collection. He also covered the stories and anecdotes taken from voracious readers such as Autosh Mukhrjee, Vachaspathi Mishra, Madam Curie. - Dr. M.V. Sunil addressed the citizens of Mysore on the day and called for up-gradation of facilities at public libraries by proper and immediate adoption of information and communication technologies.
