Gaur Librarian & Head of Division- Kala Nidhi Abstract: With the ever increasing proliferation of Information Technology, the volume of born digital content produced in the social, enterprise, government and personal spaces is exponentially growing to enormous proportions. This digital content, though ephemeral and non-tangible in its existence, forms a significant part of human heritage for future generations. This unprotected digital heritage may not see the living daylight by 2020 as projected by International Data Corporate (IDC), technology experts and researchers, as it is constantly threatened by digital obsolescence and frequent technological changes. In this alarming context, Department of Information Technology has taken a bold initiated to setup the Centre of Excellence for Digital Preservation at C-DAC Pune http://www.ndpp.in/ to work along with many stakeholder organizations. This presentation gives a brief overview of the digital preservation challenges, international scenario, the Indian digital preservation initiative and the emerging opportunities. About the speaker: Dr. Dinesh Katre is presently working as Associate Director & HoD of Human-Centred Design and Computing Group at C-DAC Pune, India. He is also the Chief Investigator of Centre of Excellence for Digital Preservation project sponsored by Department of Information Technology. He has rich experience of R&D in diverse areas such as Digital Archival Systems, Virtual Museums, e-Learning, Interactive Game Design and Multimedia Authoring. He has published over 40 research papers and two books related to Human-Computer Interaction. He is a member of Editorial Board for i-manager's Journal of Educational Technology and AIAI Journal of Intelligent Human-Computer & Web Interaction. Recently, he has been elected as the Vice-chair for Working Group on Human Work Interaction Design of International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). He has a Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction from Birla Institute of Technology & Sciences, Pilani and Master of Design from Industrial Design Centre, Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai.
