* Sudden Demise of Mr Arun Ghosh(1933-2015)*
Sri Arun Ghosh, an Eminent librarian and Editorial Board Member of IASLIC
Newsletter, who was one of the pioneers of amalgamating library movement
and social sciences passed away on 15.02.2015 at the age of 82 years. He
left this world for his heavenly abode after a prolonged battle against
cancer at a private nursing home in Rajarhat. He is survived by his wife,
son, daughter-in-law and grandson.Till the last days of his eventful life
he was actively associated with library movement in West Bengal.
He was born on 24.07.1933 in the then East Bengal presently Bangladesh.
Later on he shifted to Kolkata with his family .Since childhood he had seen
hardships, had to fight against poverty and eventually got associated with
the communist movement. He later on had chosen librarianship as his
profession. He had long been associated with the Bengal Library Association
certificate course in library science as a teacher. He was associated with
IASLIC as a council member, as member of different editorial boards of
different IASLIC publications. His journey in this profession started long
back in 1963 as a librarian in Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture. He
then joined IIM Kolkata library in 1964. He came in contact with Historian
Barun De and founded Centre for studies in social science and served as a
librarian there from 1973 to 1993. Among his several other notable
contributions, he is well remembered for writing a chronology on social
science in Economic and Political Review. While serving as a librarian in
âBhawani Sen Granthagar o Gabeshana Kendraâ he took initiative to apply
Marxist theory and laws in historical and social science research and
maintained a similar collection relevant to the purpose. He wrote several
books including âAkkharer abahon athoba paribartaman granthagar bhabnaâ,
âThe Argumentative Indian: sobdo aarsuddhatar swaralipiâ, âBoi Jatha
â etc.
One of his unforgettable contribution was his editorship of a four-volume
book titled âJanayuddha Deshbhag O Bharater Communist Partyâ. Among the
books published in English âIndian Political Movements1919-1971: a
systematic bibliographyâ and ajoint editorship with eminent librarian
Arunkumar Dasgupta titled âReligion Secularism and Conversion in India: a
documentationâ are his notable works. As desired by him, his body is
donated to N R S Medical College and Hospital for development of Medical
Sciences.
Sri Ghosh has contributed a lot in development of IASLIC activities. His
sudden demise is a great loss to the profession and IASLIC as well. IASLIC
mourns his passing with deepest condolence for his family.
