Hane --------------------------------------------------------------------------------August 15, 2005 — IBM has been working on an engineering foundation tosupport applications that make sense of the facts, meaning, andrelationships in unstructured information. IBM's UnstructuredInformation Management Architecture (UIMA) is an architecture andframework platform for creating, integrating, and deployingunstructured information management solutions that use combinations ofsemantic analysis and search components. The company has justannounced it is making UIMA available as free, open source software.The UIMA framework has already been embedded in IBM products,including IBM WebSphere Information Integrator OmniFind Edition, whichIBM said is the first commercially available software platform forprocessing content based on the UIMA standard. IBM WebSphere PortalServer and Lotus Work Place also leverage UIMA for content processing.In addition, 16 software vendors have announced commercial support forand adoption of UIMA.
