Dear Sir/Madam
"The beginning of all understanding is classification"
-Hyden White
Information technology (IT) We have been using this term for decades
as the supersonic word, which can be of solution to all the problems of
the libraries and information centers. By emphasizing lot on IT, we are
slowly moving from the bottom-line of the library and information science.
We are in a verge to forgotten our great S R Ranganthan, but noteworthy
thing is IT people have embraced Ranganthan for organizing information on
the web. His idea of faceted classification is the buzzword among
interface designers and new subject Information Architecture is evolving
strongly based on faceted analysis.
Instead of concentrating lot on IT, if we shift our focus bit on towards
training library graduates towards classification, thesauri, controlled
vocabularies, metadata and search systems and how it has been used in
technological environment, this will help us to understand both library
and information science and information technology.
The field of librarianship has been largely devoted to the task of
organizing and providing access to information. So why all the fuss now?
Some of the IA techniques have been included in MyDLIS Syllabus (for
instance www.epicurious.com-which has been designed on the basis of
faceted classification)
With best wishes
