The major resources for information now-a-day are internet and libraries. The automation of library processes to serve the users more effectively is one of the major objectives of a particular library. Implementation of new technologies to mechanize the various processes of the library will help the users utilize the resources efficiently. This colloquium provides a brief overview of the developments in the field of library automation in the last two decades. We have divided library automation into two distinct parts. One is in-house library automation which discusses automation of several in-house processes like house-keeping, serials control, cataloguing and indexing etc. Second is the digital library initiative discussing the web-based OPACs, libraries as portals, development of Ariel, MIME, digital reference services and interoperability of information systems.
