Dear Friends / LIS Professionals,
I am reporting with deep sorrow, the sad demise of Professor K.A. Isaac , on 12th Sep. 2005 at night !
Professor Isaac was the former University Librarian & Head of the Dept. of Library & Information Science, University of Kerala. He was the recipient of the Fellowship of the Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation. Prof. Isaac had held several important assignments, which included, Senate Member and Dean of Faculty of Arts of the University of Kerala, Governing Body Member of INSDOC, Special Officer (Library) of the M.G. University, UGC Professor, Chairman / Member of several Commissions & Committees, etc.
Prof. Isaac, an ardent disciple of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, was responsible for initiating and developing the professional Library Science Education in Kerala through the DLIS of the University of Kerala, which he spearheaded for two-and-a-half decades since its inception. He had significantly contributed to the Public Library Movement and the Special Library development in the State too. Better known as the 'Father of Professional Librarianship in Kerala' and the 'Gentleman Librarian of India' , he was a beacon for LIS professionals - both young and old. His hundreds of disciples now stretch across the world, carrying out their professional jobs with mission mode.
He had authored a number of well-known books including the titles 'Library Legislation' , ' Literature Search' and several Papers and Reports.
Prof. Isaac had been the Patron of the Kerala Library Association too.
The blend of his highly intellectual personality and refined behaviour made him a respected friend to limitless people cutting across all professions .That was the secret of his success too, for effectively disseminating the message of our profession to a wider domain - something very rare during these days!
His demise is a great loss to the education sector in general and to the LIS domain, in particular!
He is survived by his wife Chechamma and sons Madhu (Advocate, Trivandrum) and Balu (Professor, IIT Bombay) .
