the third year, ECS will be opening its digital library

to celebrate International Open Access Week
http://ES.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT03MDUwNTc1JnA9MSZ1PTEwOTM1MzQ2ODUmbGk9NDg2...—that
means over 132,000 articles and abstracts are free for anyone to read and
download. So, if you or any of your friends and colleagues are interested
in fields like energy storage, semiconductors, sensors, monitoring health
conditions, or communications, visit our library and discover what’s out
there. This year’s Open Access Week theme is “Open in order to…” ECS wants
to be open in order to promote better collaborations, increase impact, and
make faster progress. Happy reading

was the first scientific society to host a satellite OpenCon

As part of the 232nd ECS Meeting in National Harbor, ECS gathered the top
advocates in the field of open science to talk about ideas for the next
generation of research. They explored what’s happening now in open access,
barriers to making science more open, and the inevitable change that is
happening in scholarly research communication. Couldn’t attend? You can
watch the talks and panel discussion on the ECS YouTube channel

First ECS Data Sciences Hack Day a Huge Success
[image: Hack Day logo]
http://ES.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT03MDUwNTc1JnA9MSZ1PTEwOTM1MzQ2ODUmbGk9NDg2...Thirty
people from three continents, representing early career researchers at
prominent universities and in industry, came together to be part of the
first ECS Data Sciences Hack Day
http://ES.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT03MDUwNTc1JnA9MSZ1PTEwOTM1MzQ2ODUmbGk9NDg2....
The day was led by researchers Dan Schwartz, David Beck, and Matt Murbach
from the University of Washington and succeeded in demonstrating the
immense opportunities when electrochemical knowledge is merged with data
and software. Check out

another Hack Day at the 233rd ECS Meeting in Seattle.

ECRs are Key Partners in Changing Publishing Models
There are examples from around
http://ES.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT03MDUwNTc1JnA9MSZ1PTEwOTM1MzQ2ODUmbGk9NDg2...
the world that early career researchers (ECRs) are embracing new programs
and attitudes with regard to open science models. Refusing to serve as
editors of commercial journals, as well as becoming active in organizations
like Bullied into Bad Science, are two such examples. ECRs are carefully
weighing their chances at promotion and tenure and considering what they
believe may be a more ethical way forward. What we know is true is that
there will be many forms of *open* in the future, and small steps and
risk-taking by ECRs can influence our path.

Tidbits to Watch...
- Several large scientific publishers are taking legal action against
ResearchGate for allegedly hosting millions of articles that violate
copyright law.
- A new paper published on the *Social Science Research Network*
suggests that Wikipedia articles are influencing scientific literature.
While the influence may be controversial, it speaks positively about
increased equity in research access.
- Projekt DEAL is a consortium of 150 German libraries, universities,
and research institutes that wants to take down the paywall in front of
research papers that have German primary authors. Smaller deals have been
made with other countries but the DEAL negotiations are intense and ongoing.
