Dear Professional Friends, LIS Academy in collaboration with RRI Library is organizing a Consultative meeting of LIS Experts, peers and leading educationists to suggest the inclusion of roles and responsibilities of Library and information centers in the Draft NEP – 2019 About the Meeting: The ambitious Draft National Education Policy – 2019 proposed by the MHRD is under serious discussion among the Educationists and Academics of our country. The document was penned by an eminent team of experts comprising of eminent Scholars and Educationist of India and abroad. Lots of thought process has gone behind the preparation of these 477 pages of Draft Policy Document. Thanks to the hard and intellectual efforts put in by the Committee. It is anticipated that this new Education Policy will bring a phenomenal change in our educational system. The LIS Academy welcomes the ambitious initiative of MHRD. While going through the report, it is observed that the Libraries and information centers being a basic and vital infrastructure in an education system, have be marginalized in the draft report. Several senior LIS professionals have raised various issues on discussion forums with respect to the non-inclusion of role of libraries in different sectors of Education System in the draft NEP-2019. To discuss and deliberate the issues related to libraries in Draft NEP, it is proposed to bring all LIS pioneers / experts and eminent educationists into a common platform and suggest to the MHRD to include the desired suggestions in the draft policy document while finalizing the same. Hence a draft memorandum will be prepared by LIS Academy after consolidating the views of the experts. The LIS- Academy is planning to organise a consultative meeting of peers and experts on 20th July 2019 from 11 AM to 5 PM, at Auditorium, RRI, Bangalore. It is requested to all experts from LIS profession, Peers from education sector, publishing industry are invited for the consultative meeting to brainstorm the issues and consolidate the suggestions leading to the preparation of draft memorandum. About the Organizers: LIS Academy: The acronym LIS Academy stands for “Library & Information Science Academy”. Like-minded library professionals have established LIS Academy in the year 2016 as a professional, Charitable Trust to work for the development of the Profession and to assist Libraries with the state-of-art technology. The primary focus is to provide need-based service to the profession and to work for the advancement of Library and Information Science (LIS). The current focus of LIS Academy is to reach the unreached LIS professionals with rural settings to minimize the digital divide. It also aims at the working for the Public Libraries, the segment which almost remains as an area of neglect. RRI Library: The RRI library has been developed around the library started by Prof. C. V. Raman. After the institute’s activities enlarged from 1972 onwards, library’s collection developed in the new areas of research activities. Its collection is strong in the areas of astronomy and astrophysics, theoretical physics, optics and liquid crystals. The Library is used not only by the scientists of RRI but also by other researchers belonging to Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, National Aerospace Laboratories, National Centre for Biological Sciences, TIFR Centre for Applicable Mathematics etc. Who can attend this Meeting: All the LIS Professionals who have gone through the Draft National Education Policy Document and desires to propose their viewpoints for inclusion in the Draft Policy can attend the meeting voluntarily and contribute their inputs for preparation of memorandum to be submitted to the MHRD. The print copy of the draft NEP will be tabled and key issues included in the Draft NEP along with the Discussion points will be presented by the organizers. Ample amount of time will be allowed for discussion and every individuals opinion will be recorded for further inclusion in the memorandum. This meeting is neither a workshop nor a seminar. No participation certificates will be issued to the participants. No TA/DA will be paid to the attendees. However, Tea, Snacks and working lunch will be served during the meeting. The draft NEP, the views expressed by some of the LIS Experts on different forums, and the policy guidelines suggested by some of the LIS Experts to the members of the committee of draft NEP way back in 2017 are placed on the LIS Academy website at http://lisacademy.org. Efforts will also be put to place the key points of NEP and the proposed Discussion points on the LIS Academy website before the scheduled date of Meeting. Dear All,
I appreciate the initiative taken by LIS Academy. I hope, the
deliberations and further communication of discussion points to MHRD
would help in restoring the role of libraries in NEP-2019.
I also request LIS associations and others to take up similar
initiatives in regard NEP-2019 and 5% customs duty levied on books in
the latest budget of Govt of India.
