INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE Documentation Research and Training Centre 8TH Mile, Mysore Road Bangalore 560059 DRTC Colloquium (1) Metadata Harvesting: protocols, tools and some success stories In this era of knowledge society providing single platform for resource discovery is of key importance. The collection and gathering of document information from distributed repositories and making a registry for the same is the task of metadata harvester. The repositories act as dispenser of knowledge which communicate with the harvester through transport protocols commonly used of which is OAI-PMH. The protocol helps in the easy flow of the requests and makes available the responses in XML format. The various harvesters like PKP Harvester, jOAI act as facilitator of knowledge, which gather the information provided by various data providers. The metadata standard used in the process is the unqualified Dublin Core, the Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) including others. In the current presentation we shall explain the architectural aspect of the metadata harvesting model and the various protocols associated with it by taking success stories. Lastly, we shall conclude the colloquium by spreading a word regarding challenges and improvements that can be made in this domain.
