Re: [LIS-Forum] Digital Library Software
Dear Sh. Rajiva, Thanks for the query, though it's a pretty complex one. We have now many open source softwares in vogue (Greenstone, EPrints and DSpace etc.) in addition to the WinISIS/GENISIS applications. Greenstone, DSpace and EPrints are later additions to cutting edge DL solutions. Each of these software bring along with them excellent feature sets and sometimes unique facilities to the user community. And they all have worldwide acceptance too. Greenstone (http://greenstone.org) is a general purpose digital library software, an initiative from the New Zealand digital library project, and the Dept. of Computer Science at the University of Waikato New Zealand. You can get most of the support for Greenstone from the above site as well as the South Asia Support site at http://greenstonesupport.iimk.ac.in. DSpace (http://www.dspace.org) is a collaborative effort of the MIT and the HP Labs, and EPrints (http://www.eprints.org) comes from the University of Southampton, UK. Both these are also digital library software applications with more focus on building open access Institutional Repositories. So, to answer your question as to which is the best software for a University Library, I will say all are, and the same time, depending on your objectives, requirements, applications, specifications etc. just to mention a few. You will be the best judge, or a team of professionals involving the librarians as well as IT professionals in your University could look at these softwares and then zero in on to one. I would also encourage you to read the article 'StoneD' appeared in DLib Magazine September 2005 (http://www.dlib.org), authored by the Chief Architects of both Greenstone and DSpace. Dear colleagues,
I have been trying to collect information about the various digital library softwares. I would be happy to know your personal experiences with each or any of them, and kindly give your recommendation for a university library.

A few days ago the EPrints team released version 3 of EPrints and I am told it is pretty user friendly. I am not technically competent to comment on the merits of OA software (or any software for that matter). But the EPrints website is indeed great. Pleanty of useful information, pleasant on the eyes and lots of OA related news. Just visit it. It doesn't cost anything except a few minutes of your time. As it happens Prof. Wendy Hall and Dr Leslie Carr of the University of Southampton will be in India for a week later this month and will be visiting Chennai, B'lore and Delhi. Both of them will take part in the International Conference on Sematic Web and Digital Libraries being organised by Dr A R D Prasad of DRTC-ISI, B'lore. The British Council is working out their itinerary. In Delhi, I am alerting Mr Sukhdev Singh and a few others by a separate mail. Arun [Subbiah Arunachalam] --- mgsree@iimk.ac.in wrote:
