Very Interesting, pls go through it. It is odd. I understand that ResearchGate specifically tells people that
they should upload only papers that are open access. For the rest one needs
to ask the author. Maybe they can strengthen their systems in some way.
But when Sci-Hub continues to thrive with its blatant violation of
copyright - ResearchGate - a great initiative should not be closed. The
publishers must actually help them find a solution not to host copyright
protected papers and only open access papers

In my opinion the commercial publishers are misusing their rights and privileges in dealing with the scientific research publishing. As long as ResearchGate doesn’t make any profit from the uploaded papers or eat into their profits why should they worry? These networks are not equal to Scihub ? The lawsuits of Elsevier and ACS on research networks are uncalled for when there is a universal acceptance of ‘fair use’ and open access without infringing upon the basic copyright. Imagine a situation when authors decide not to part their copyrights to commercial publishers, which is already being done by some western university departments by boycotting certain publishers for their monopolistic attitude. Finally, we have to acknowledge that the publishers and authors are dependant on one another in this scholarly communication system. If any one tries to overact the other it may lead to chaos. We have already seen the progress OA has made in taming the shrew (publishers). Let’s look at research communication as non-commercial activity. If the publishers pull the strings too much it will certain break the bond between the publishers and creators of knowledge. Dr M Koteswara Rao Former Librarian University of Hyderabad
