A summary of the details of this change follows. Why revise the ISBN standard? To increase the numbering capacity of the ISBN system (owing to the increase of electronic publications and the resulting proliferation of editions and formats). 1. To make the ISBN totally compatible with the EAN-13 used for other products and supply chains. 2. To decide whether and how the ISBN is assigned to certain types of monographic publications (e.g. digital files; print-on-demand materials; discrete parts of monographic publications). 3. To specify the authority to assign ISBN and the administration of the ISBN system.
