I now strongly hold the view that the word Science in our qualifications has lost its utility or charm and the professional degree should henceforth be called B./M.degree in Library & information Management.This is the need of the hour and our courses should be revised accordingly.The name Lib.& Inf.Sc. has today become a misnomer. Dear colleagues, I am happy to note that prof. mangla has raised a very relevant and pertinent issue which is also brooding in my mind for some time. Yes, indeed the 'science' in our profession does not stand out clearly for obvious reasons. In our universities, we have LIS departments under the faculty of Arts and Science also. We also notice that every other profession has a clear mandate and a 'professional calling' which is acceptable and respected by everyone. I think with the introduction of IT in libraries the LIS profession has come a long way both in term of skills used by the library staff to deliver information in non-traditional ways, and the paradigm shift in information generation, storage, processing and dissemination itself. The name Library & Information Management is aptly suitable for our professional courses as suggested by Prof. Mangla. Dr. M. Koteswara Rao Librarian University of Hyderabad professional like
