Dear all I have seen many lecture and people talking about Big data but I could not understand how this concept is helpful for the library professionals and library patrons. What a library professionals can do with big data if we don't understand properly how to handle small data of catalogue, Digital repositories, etc. Please educate me being academic librarian what I can do with big data and where I can find it in library? Is there any relevance of this concept for libraries in Indian context or at present it is one of the topic to speak and keep in syllabus/conferences? Thanking You

Yes, what Dr Mishra says is true. I too feel that big data has no relevance to Library and Information Science profession; but some people are creating an impression that it falls under the domain of LIS. Strictly speaking big data is nothing but the enormous amount of data/ information in bits and pieces that is being created and shared through emails and social media platforms scattered over the Internet. At the most it can be used by corporates to know user preferences to market their products by using data mining techniques. As such it is not a structured information which the libraries can disseminate it to their users. The least thing which we Library professionals can do is help the corporate firms to organise, index or classify this data for their use. When there are people who still talk about library automation and computer science faculty in LIS schools, the question of handling big data is a mute question. Remember what happened with the concept of ‘knowledge’ being dragged into LIS domain? Dr M Koteswara Rao Former librarian, UoH Sent from my iPhone
