He graduated from the National Defence Academy and was commissioned in the Indian Navy. After nine years of service, including spending a year on deputation to command a company of the Border Roads in North Sikkim, he resigned his commission and joined a private sector industry in Kolkata. He rose to be the Managing Director of the company. Later he switched to a Joint Sector company in Srinagar, Kashmir, as its President. Thereafter, he took a year off to write his first novel Shikhar aur Seemayen based on his experiences in Sikkim. This novel won the literary award of the Delhi Hindi Academy. It was translated in English as Orange Moon and the hard cover was released with great praise by Ramakanta Rath, the President of Sahitya Akademi at that time. A pocket book edition has also been published in USA. His other Hindi novel Lal Kothi Alvida was made into a TV serial and eighty-two half hour episodes of it were telecast at prime time by the Doordarshan. Thereafter, he directed a full-length feature film Duvidha based on this novel. This art film received Certificates of Special Merit at the International Film Festivals at Strasbourg and Philadelphia, and a Mejor Actriz, Rashi B Award at Festival de Granada, and was screened at Festival du Cinema de Bruxelles. This novel has also been translated and published in English as Farewell Red Mansion. Sharat Kumar was also a long term Director of a prestigious MBA school (IMT Ghaziabad) when his book Mind your Management won the NTPC-IMA award for the ‘Best Management Book of the Year’. During this period he was also appointed a member of U.G.C’s search committee for inspection of major management schools for grant of ‘Deemed to be University’ status.
