International School of Information Management University of Mysore in association with Computer Society of India, Mysore Chapter Special Lecture On WIRELESS SECURITY: Threats and Solutions By Dr. Srinivas Sampalli Professor and 3M Teaching Fellow, Faculty of Computer Science Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Prof. K. Chidananda Gowda Former Vice Chancellor Kuvempu University Will preside Date & Time: August 11: 11 AM Venue: Vidyanidhi Seminar Hall Department of Library and Information Science Manasagangotri, Mysore All are cordially invited --- Abstract of the talk: Wireless networks based on the popular 802.11 standard (Wi-Fi) are vulnerable to a number of intrusions such as eavesdropping, meet-in-the-middle, data modification and denial of service. These intrusions can be launched easily when the network has security mechanisms at the minimum level (e.g. MAC filtering) or at the medium level (WEP). Even with high-level security protocols such as WPA1 and WPA2 in place, many of these intrusions are still possible. This talk will focus on the risks and vulnerabilities that exist in 802.11 wireless networks at various security levels. Tools and techniques used by hackers to exploit these vulnerabilities will be identified. Lessons learned from past security protocols and shortcomings in emerging security standards will be examined. Three prototypes which have been designed at Dalhousie University under the Dalhousie-Industry Canada project on wireless security for the detection and prevention of intrusions on 802.11 networks will be discussed. The talk will include demos of how these techniques will detect and prevent intrusions at different security levels on wireless LANs. Speakers Biography Srinivas (Srini) Sampalli is a Professor and 3M Teaching Fellow and teaches in the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He has been researching in the area of security and quality of service in wireless and wireline networks. Specifically, he has been involved in research projects on protocol vulnerabilities, security best practices, risk mitigation and analysis, and the design of secure networks. He was the Dalhousie principal investigator for the Secure Active VPN Environment (SAVE) project sponsored by the Canadian Institute for Telecommunications Research (CITR), a National Center for Excellence, and is currently the principal investigator for the Wireless Security project sponsored by Industry Canada. Dr. Sampalli has received many teaching awards, at the faculty, university and regional levels. In 2005, he received the 3M Teaching Fellowship, Canadas national teaching award. -- Dr. Shalini R.
