It has put democracy back in people's hands. Citizen Journalists, equipped with mobile phones, portable cameras, and blog, are rapidly becoming alternative media as a reliable and wide-ranging source of information throughout the world. Citizen Journalism plays an important role on development of the society towards spreading information, unearthing corruption or just disseminating news on anything happening in the community. This workshop is designed to serve media workers and those who look after media/documentation in nonprofit organizations. Many of these organizations are small and modestly resourced. It’s safe to assume that many of the participants are just beginning to learn how to use new media technologies and storytelling in their work; some may be completely unfamiliar with multimedia journalism and social media, with a few at the “intermediate” skill level. The workshop will offer a supportive and informal atmosphere to encourage participants to try unfamiliar things and to learn new skills. TENTATIVE AGENDA 2 days, 9am to 5pm everyday CITIZEN JOURNALISM -- Introduction to important aspects of covering a story -- Practical tips on writing -- Practical tips on recording information and taking photographs -- Introduction to citizen journalism resources and networks -- Practical session on writing stories for citizen journalism SOCIAL MEDIA -- Setting up a blog -- Introduction to social networking sites -- Learning to create a strategy to use social media to pull in more traffic to your blog -- Managing your blog and other social network accounts PHOTO AND AUDIO-VIDEO EDITING -- Learning to use free and open source audio editing tool -- Publishing audio material -- Learning to use free and open source video editing tools -- Publishing videos online -- Learning to use free and open source photo manipulation tools For this workshop you are requested to bring samples of stories you have written or any type of case studies or reports you may have collected in the past. Also bring information about your organisation – mission, goals, objectives and list of activities and achievements. SOME BENEFITS TO THE PARTICIPANTS: -- Participants will be equipped in collecting and developing stories for citizen journalism. -- Participants will be able to produce short videos and audio clips that will be able to support their stories. -- Participants will begin to use social media for publishing and campaigning their stories. PLEASE NOTE: -- Selection: Participants will be selected after reviewing their application form -- Venue: Final venue, timings will be informed to the selected participants. -- Workshop Fee: Rs.1200/- to paid in cash or cheque in favor of URMUL Trust, payable at Bikaner. -- Breakfast, lunch, tea/coffee/snacks will be provided. -- There will be no travel or accommodation allowances provided to the participants. -- Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop, digital camera, handy-cam, etc. -- Limited Internet access will be available at the workshop.
