This is regarding Appasaheb Naikal's request for suggestions for collection development in a school library.  I wish to share my personal experience with him: I have set up a small children's library in a village near Pondicherry spending money from my pocket to purchase books.  It is actually a story reading session - we sit under a tree and I read stories to them in regional language and english and then explain it to them line by line.  Sometimes we sing together. Children will tell a story, joke, riddles which they have learnt.  We discuss current affairs since last class.  Do craft work on alternate sessions.  At the end of the session issue journal/books to them. Initially I collected the weekly supplements meant for children from the regional language newspapers and circulated them among the children.  It helped me to identify the serious readers and their capacity to handle the reading material given to them. Recently I bought books in the Chennai Book Fair (i.e. the Fairs might help you to buy regional language books with a discount). Children's Book Trust, New Delhi might have a few regional language publications.  You may check with your Government's Directorate of Public Libraries for possible help.  I heard Infosys's Sudha Murthy is interested in establishing School Libraries in rural Karnataka.  She might help you. I keep play material like Chess, Box of crayons and papers, Carrom, Tic Toe  etc., They wish to have skipping ropes, volleyball or football - I tactfully declined this request since it will not keep them focused on 'reading' People might be willing to pay subscription for children's magazines should you let them know about your efforts.
