Recently some mails are being posted on Lis-forum for changing MLIS to MSc degree ( few mails for and few against). Surprise to note the suggestion to change the nomenclature is coming from our young professionals who are more tech-savvy!!!. One should have self respect for his profession. The dedication to profession brings all fame and satisfaction. We should not feel shy, shame or degraded while telling our degree to someone. This fear of inferiority in society makes us nervous. Each profession has its own uniqueness and value. In what way our image will improve by telling MSc? In many universities our course is classified under Faculty of Science like any other basic science courses. "Still people are thinking that Library means simply sitting around the book and doing some issue and return" in what way an MSc nomenclature will help us to remove this image? Unless we prove our credibility.... "So we have revise the syllabus of LIS.we should follow the ALA syllabus in India" who said change of syllabus needs change of degree name? the syllabus can be updated frequently benchmarking with top LIS schools even without changing the name of the degree. I strongly opine that our degree nomenclature has unique feature and it need not be changed as few budding fellow professionals are proposing to change. Fellow colleagues, let us stop this type of discussion as it could lead to throwing mud on our face and profession. Dear Colleagues,
I simply agree with Dr. Manjunath, we library science professionals should not feel hesitated to introduce ourself as LIS professionalists, we have our own identity in society and should work to improve that. Feel proud to say that we belong to cult of Information providers.
Thanks

Thanks very much Manjunath for this sensible intervention. If we serve our
clients well, we will be respected. Long after they have relinquished
office, people like Jayaram Haravu and Aspari Ratnakar are respected. The
late T B rajashekar achieved a lot working quietly without much fanfare. The
late Sarangan did not have a big degree but he ran the CSIR library so well,
and later managed the Fertilizer association library virtually
single-handed. Their contributions are there to see. As you had mentioned,
it is the dedication which matters. I wish young entrants to the profession
take them as role models. I know of librarians who are doing exceptionally
well, but who have not gone to a Library school and I don't want to mention
their names as they are still in service. What counts is not the degree but
the kind and quality of service one provides; one's willingnes to accept
that ours is a secondary profession meant to serve scientists, scholars,
teachers, professionals, policymakers, students and the lay public.
Bestwishes.
Arun

As Professor Arunachalam said, even people with out Library Science degrees, are happy to be called as Librarians. They are working as LIBRARIANS in India. Then what is the problem with our own young pople? It is the work that matters, not the designation, please understand.
And there is no need to change the course name, as well. Ours is MORE THAN a M.Sc, do not understimate our degree by calling it as an 'M. Sc'. Offcourse the syllabus should be changed, and UGC should come-up with new syllabus. The latest UGC syllabus prepared by Professor Karisiddappa committee may need sufficient and timely changes.
And, like Elsevier's advertisement says, "Neven Understimate the Importance of a Librarian". Tell to your own mind that "I am a Librarian", atleast 10 times a day.
