Best of India’s articles are published in Open Access Journals
I noted an interesting fact while I was preparing my Presentation for the recently concluded conference of UNESCO, in partnership with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) - "Opening up by Closing the Circle: Strengthening Open Access in India" on 21 October 2013 at JNU. I was trying to answer a frequently asked question in my presentation – what about the quality of Open Access Journals? I did a little bit of research to find out as what is the status of top Indian Journals published from India. As quality of journals is still measured by their Impact Factors – so I picked top 20 Indian Journals according to their 2012 Impact Factors. Then I proceeded to look Internet for the URLs of these Top Twenty Indian Journals and attempted if I could access and download articles from these journals for free. I was able to access 16 of these 20 top journals. Which is quit well – a score of 80%. Coming to Bio-Medical Journals – which is of interest to me – I was surprised by the fact that I could access all these Bio-Medical Journal. Wow – Top Bio-Medical journals from India are accessible openly. So, what does that means? It simply means that best of India’s articles, especially in the field of bio-medical sciences, are published in Open Access Journals.
