MyLISA's Workshop

Dear Professionals, A Workshop on Stock Verification and Loss of Books was organized by Mysore Librarians and Information Scientists Association (MyLISA), Mysore and Mysore University Library, University of Mysore, Mysore on Thursday May 29, 2014 at Mysore University Library,Mysore. The purpose of the workshop was to address the issues related stock verification, a regular event in libraries. In addition the workshop aimed to throw some light on decision making issues related to loss of books, mutilated books and weeding out of books from stock. There were 94 participants from various parts of Karnataka and neighboring states. In the first session, Dr. C. P. Ramasesh, Librarian, Mysore University Library, University of Mysore, Mysore spoke on 'Stock Verification: Processes, Procedures, Policies and Practices' stressed the need for following the 4 Ps of Stock Verification highlighting the need, advantages, guidelines/ orders pertaining to stock verification and loss of books as given by Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India, Dept. of Collegiate Education and other agencies. He explained the issues very effectively with real-life case studies taken from various institutions. Presentation of Stock Verification Report and Procedure for disposal and Weeding out of books were also discussed in detail. The second session on 'Stock Verification Simplified: using spreadsheets and other general purpose software' stressed on the technological aspects like use of Spreadsheets for conducting stock verification. Dr. N S Harinarayana, Associate Professor, DLIS, University of Mysore provided a demo on the use of various Spreadsheet functions for conducting stock verification using Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets. This was followed by a talk by Dr. Sunil M V, Librarian, SDM-IMD, Mysore who provided an overview of what one can expect from technology for smooth conduct of the stock verification process which was highly appreciated by the participants. The post lunch session was conducted by Mr. Keerthinarayana, of Ms. Barcode Systems and Consultancy who demonstrated the use of Barcodes. He gave a demo of various types of Barcode scanners, printers, and different types of labels used for printing of barcodes. The last session, was an interactive session in which the participants shared their views and experiences about the stock verification processes followed in their respective institutions and the solutions to some of the issues faced by the library professionals were discussed upon. Valedictory program: Prof. Lingaraja Gandhi, Director, College Development Council and Director, UGC-Academic Staff College was the Chief Guest. He stressed on the role played by libraries as Temples of Knowledge and Librarians as Facilitators of Knowledge. The Workshop Director, Dr. Mallinath Kumbar, Professor, DLIS, University of Mysore, Mysore who summed up the activities conducted during the workshop. The program was presided over by Sri. S Nagaraja, President MyLISA and Librarian, RIE, Mysore and Dr. N S Harinaryana, Secretary, MyLISA and Associate Professor, DLIS, University of Mysore welcomed the Chief Guest and gave a brief introduction about the activities of MyLISA.
