DU Information Literacy for Research Competency Course

Dear Sir/Madam, Delhi University Library System (DULS) has developed a 60 hours Information Literacy for Research Competency course, at par with other International Universities of repute. In close colleboration with Institute of Lifelong Learning (ILLL), the premier institute of the University of Delhi engaged in enhancing the quality of education by integrating ICT in higher education, DULS is going to launch this course from 4th September, 2010. The classes will be held at ILLL, University of Delhi only on Saturdays, from 10:00 am to 05:00 pm. Course Contents The highlight of the course includes lectures and hands on practice on the following: General Computer concepts; MS-Office; WWW; E-mail management; Research Strategies; SPSS; Sources & Types of Information; Subscribed Electronic Resources (Databases); Web Resources; RSS; Wikies; Blogs; Online Searching Techniques; Information use Ethics; Plagiarism & Copy Right Issues; Citation Standards; Reporting research; etc. Course Benifits Information Literacy can be termed as a set of individual abilities to identify, retrieve, evaluate, and use information that is appropriate to a particular requirement. Students who develop information literacy skills will be more successful in their studies and their daily lives. These skills are an essential element in becoming a lifelong learner. An information literate student is one who is able to: · Comprehend the academic research process including how to do research, research setting and design, and to be able to identify research topics by applying critical thinking to research questions. · Recognise his/her information requirements. · Analyse and formulate queries based on his/her information requirements. · Identify and locate potential sources of information. · Design, develop and successfully use various search strategies. · Access various information sources, especially online e-resources. · Evaluate information gathered from various sources and in various formats. · Comprehend various IT based statistical tools for data analysis. · Organise information for practical application. · Use information in critical thinking and problem solving. · Use information ethically. · Integrate new information into the existing body of knowledge. · Effectively communicate the knowledge and ideas with rest of the world. Duration The course is of 60 hours duration and will start from04th September, 2010. The classes will be held on Saturday only. Timings 10:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m. Venue Institute of Lifelong Learning (opp. S.G.T.B. Khalsa College), University of Delhi Eligibility The Research Scholars (M.Phil. and Ph.D.) from Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities (Except Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu and other Modern Indian Languages) from an Indian University are eligible for the course on first come first serve basis. Limited seats are available. We contemplate to start separate course for the languages excluded presently. Since course is of 60 hours duration and classes will be held on Saturdays only, it is a good opportunity for research scholars of Delhi and NCR region. Fee Rs.2,500 (Rupees two thousand five hundred only) payable by Demand Draft, in favour ofThe Director, ILLLpayable at Delhi.
