INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE Documentation Research & Training Centre 8th Mile, Mysore Road, RVCE Post Bangalore, 560 059 DRTC Seminar05 (2014 2016) Altmetrics: New ways to Quantify Research Activities ABSTRACT Altmetrics or alternative metrics is an emerging field of new methods for measuring the use and importance of scholarly articles, particularly in sciences. Earlier, for measuring research we relied on bibliometric and scientometric approaches. But the main issues with these traditional metrics is that they need more time to analyse and yield results. Through Altmetrics we can provide real time result which is based on electronic sources of information, for instance, number of downloads and page views from a publisher, repository or online reference manager like Mendeley, or the amount of discussions generated in social media sites, such as, twitter, blogs, etc. The aim of this seminar is to provide a brief overview of Altmetrics including its tools, techniques and the various challenges it possesses. We will also discuss the new opportunities in context of library and information centres which will be followed by some case studies. Speaker : Subhranshu Bhusan Sahoo Date: 13.10.2015. Time: 3.30 P.M. Venue: DRTC Class Room, ISI Bangalore. All are cordially invited.
