LIS Profession @ Crossroads
Dear Friends,
I am continuously following the discussion of the tagline "Profession
@ Crossroads." Postings of Dodamani, Vijesh, and Satish,
I have a basic question in myself, who is responsible for this kind of
treatment?
We LIS Professionals want everything to be served on a Golden Plate
without effort.
There is a famous statement of John F. Kennedy delivered in his
presidential inaugural speech after taking oath as President of
America on January 20, 1961
"Ask not what your country can do for you; Ask what you can do for
your country."
Yes! Friends, we need to apply this statement to our Profession also.
Let us retrospect ourselves, what we have done to our Profession after
enjoying the plumpy Cake from the Profession?
We all cry when something bad happens to the Profession, and some
others sympathize with their couple of postings on the LIS Forum, and
on the third day, we all forget.
Friends, many of us have come to the LIS Profession accidentally. Some
of us joined the Profession because we did not get seats in other
desired courses or did not get jobs from the courses we had completed.
So, now we should be thankful to the Profession which has given us
bread without any discrimination.
We blame our Associations for their inactiveness! Why? Who has made
them inactive?
We do not have time to repair the mistakes of our elected
Associations. We are all busy with our Growth and have no time to
think of the Profession. We are part of one or the other Associations.
Have we any time thought of participating in the activities of the
Association.
Friends, Associations will be inactive only when we are not actively
supporting the Associations' activities. I strongly suggest all my
professional friends kindly unite together and actively participate in
one or the other initiatives of the Associations and make them feel
that their efforts are reaching the last professional.
Lastly,
PROFESSION HAS GIVEN YOU A LIFE; PLEASE NURSE IT FOR PROSPERITY OF
FUTURE GENERATION OF LIBRARY PROFESSIONALS
IF I HAVE HURT ANYBODY BY THIS POSTING, KINDLY FORGIVE ME
Thanks & Regards,

It is High time we noticed this kind of indifference from the government level, but unfortunately none of our organizations were strongly taken any action against it. Some of our members have a good influence on apex bodies like UGC and the higher education departments, so they can do something of their own and regain the status of LIS profession.A joint and Meaningful effort is highly needed in this regard.

Thanks to Anand Doddamani for bringing the issue to the forum. It's really hard to digest the truth of what Anand Doddamani has raised, as he said our professionals and professional forum's are in deep sleep, we are in a pathetic situation. I request the professionals who are in the higher positions in esteemed institutions and library associations please raise your voice alteast now otherwise our profession will be in deep trouble.

Greetings.
A recent employment notification for the post of Librarian at IIM-Amritsar at Pay Level-10 has prompted me to write this email to the forum and share some of my thoughts with you.
Don’t you think the LIS Jobs are slowly getting downgraded by the elite institutes like AIIMS, IITs, IIMs in our country? If you don’t think so, you are probably in a deep sleep.
A walk-in interview was conducted for the prestigious post of Librarian at AIIMS (!) , New Delhi; the Chief Library Officer’s post was filled in IIT- Bombay with GP 7600 (!) ; Some IIMs have recruited the Librarians on the Pay Level- 13A (!). And now, on top of it, the IIM- Amritsar has advertised the post of Librarian at Level-10 (!).
The differential treatment shown to the LIS Professionals in elite institutes and universities is not just limited to the Pay Scales but also to their working conditions. In many universities, the Library Officers are being treated as non-teaching staff in-spite of them being the Academic Staff as per the UGC Guidelines.
Is it due to the decreasing standards LIS Professionals working in different institutions? Or any systematic effort is being made by some unknown persons to degrade our profession? Whatever the reason may be, one thing is for sure…. our identity as ‘professionals’ on academic campuses is under serious threat.
Those who are already occupying the higher positions such as Chief Librarians/ University Librarians are not really bothered about it. And those who are working as Deputy Librarians are happy with what they are getting. The Assistant Librarians are busy in making their careers. The Professional Associations are engrossed in conducting workshops, seminars which they think are more important than working towards the upliftment of the status of our profession. So who will raise the voice???
We are very much aware that we are slowly losing ground to other professionals in the academic institutes but are doing nothing serious to regain our status. The situation reminds me of the words of Dale Carnegie who said, *“the trouble is not ignorance but inaction”. *
The views expressed here are my personal and belong solely to me.

Anand Dodamani Mumbai
