He was at the verge of his retirement on superannuation but checked himself out not only from the job but from the life itself. I happen to meet him last Diwali and had a long chat. He had many post-retirement plans in furthering the professional activities - all that has come to halt.
I had a long and lasting friendship with Satarkar right from college days, in the library science school and then as his professional colleague. Dr. Satarkar kept himself always occupied in professional activities and lived as one of the active Librarians. He was credited for his skills in taking difficult decisions in the libraries wherever he worked. In fact, when I talked to him last month over phone, a sense of satisfaction prevailed in his speech for the contributions he made to the profession. In all the organizations he worked, he did not confine himself to the library activities alone but participated in the managerial activities of the organization and excelled.
While he was a practicing librarian, he also had an inclination towards the academic activities. He was a guide for several students for their PhD studies. He continued writing books for the professionals in a simple and lucid language, both in English as well as in Marathi, and even had plans to complete a book at hand on the Case Studies in the Librarianship after the retirement. He was also active in the library movement. Initiating the library science courses at certificate and degree level, acting as an Editor of the library associations' newsletters, moving around to give professional talks, be a part of the several committees, etc., are at his credit.
Dr. Satarkar left behind his wife who is always supportive to his activities, three highly educated children - two sons and a daughter, also a father and two brothers in an extended family. The students of Dr. Satarkar would carry forward the activities that he imbibed to keep the library science profession active in his way and thereby keep his memories alive. May the departed soul rest in peace and give strength to his family members and colleagues to absorb this unbelievable shock.
